Audited the way a registrar audits, before the registrar arrives.
An on-site review of your quality management system against ISO 9001, clause by clause, evidence first, from the floor up. You get graded findings you can act on and a remediation plan with an owner and a date on every gap.
Three reasons a manufacturer books a gap assessment.
01 · Not certified yet
A customer asked for ISO 9001.
A Tier-1 or a prime has made certification a condition of the next award, and you need to know how far you are from it before you commit a budget and a year. The assessment gives you the distance in findings, not adjectives.
02 · Certified, and drifting
The system outlived the person who built it.
You passed two surveillance audits. The quality manager who wrote the procedures has moved on, and nobody is sure the records still match the floor. Recertification is on the calendar and the registrar will open with last year's minors.
03 · Moving to ISO 9001:2026
The revision has a clock on it.
ISO 9001:2026 comes with a transition window. A transition gap assessment maps your 2015 system to the new requirements before your registrar audits against them, so the change lands on your schedule instead of theirs.
How it runs
Clause by clause, evidence first, from the floor up.
A registrar does not audit your quality manual. They audit whether the people doing the work can show the records the manual says exist. So that is what we do. We interview the people who do the work, where they do it, and we read the records they actually keep, not the ones in the binder.
Before we arrive
Scoping call and audit plan.
A 30-minute call to fix scope, sites, and dates. We build an audit plan by clause and by process, so nothing on the day is improvised.
On site
Opening meeting, floor walk, interviews, records.
We open with leadership, then work the floor: receiving inspection, calibration and measurement traceability under 7.1.5, competence records under 7.2, production control, nonconforming output, management review under 9.3, corrective action under 10.2. We close the same day with the preliminary findings, so nothing in the written report is a surprise.
Off site
Findings report and remediation plan.
Findings graded the way a registrar grades them: major, minor, opportunity for improvement. Each one is tied to the clause and to the evidence we saw or could not find. The remediation plan is prioritized, names an owner for every gap, and is sequenced against your real audit calendar.
After
Walk the plan with the people who own it.
A working session with your process owners so the plan starts moving the week it lands. Remediation support and the mock audit are scoped from what the assessment found and sold separately. You are not buying a sequence. You are buying the first step and deciding the rest with the findings in hand.
What you get
A report your registrar could have written, and a plan they never will.
Findings report, graded major, minor, and OFI.Every finding names the clause and the evidence. No finding without a record behind it.
Prioritized remediation plan.An owner and a target date per gap, sequenced against your next registrar visit and the customer audits you know about.
What it costs
A flat project fee, quoted in writing.
The fee
One flat fee, quoted in writing after the scoping call. A longer closing meeting or a second walk through receiving does not cost you more.
What it is not
We are not a registrar and we do not resell one. Your registrar's independence is what makes the findings from a gap assessment worth acting on.
Questions
Before you book.
Is a gap assessment the same as a registrar's Stage 1 audit?
No. Stage 1 is your registrar's documentation readiness review. A gap assessment goes to the floor and to the records people actually keep, looking for what Stage 2 will find.
Do we need to be certified already?
No. The assessment works before first certification, for certified plants that have drifted since the last surveillance visit, and as a transition gap assessment for the move from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026.
Do you run gap assessments remotely?
No. Evidence first means walking the floor and reading the records where they are kept. Coverage is Mountain West first, continental US by arrangement.
Does it cover AS9100 or IATF 16949?
The assessment is against ISO 9001. If your certificate scope is AS9100 or IATF 16949, say so on the scoping call. The ISO 9001 core is the same, and we will be clear about what we can and cannot cover.
